Top Men’s Jackets for All Seasons

A ‘Jacket for All Seasons’?

Well guys, let’s just start off by blowing this myth out of the water – we’re sorry to say it simply doesn’t exist. Especially here in Ireland where the weather is so changeable. Not only do we experience the seasons in all their glory  during the course of a year, we’ve been known to get a taste of every weather during a single day.

Let there be no panic, there’s an abundance of choice out there in men’s jackets, perfect for every occasion and suitable for all weathers. Here’s our top picks for the ultimate outerwear in 2022. You may just need one of every type...

1. Bomber Jacket

Number one on our list, and for very good reason is the bomber jacket. Lightweight, durable with serious cool factor, you’ll find occasion to wear your bomber jacket year-round. Ideal for balmy summer evenings, and milder days of early autumn and late spring. Available in a variety of colours and fabrics, the bomber will also take you from day wear to evenings out, making it a hugely versatile jacket – a must for every man’s wardrobe.

2. Puffa Jacket

You say puffer, we say puffa – whatever you call them, these extra warm men’s winter jackets are a must for cold autumn/winter days. Lined with duck down feathers for insulating heat while remaining extra lightweight. You’ll be mighty glad of your puffa jacket for all those winter outdoor activities. For walking the dog, going to the match, or even if it’s just running from the door to the car, in winter sun or snow these puffa jackets won’t let you down. Like wearing your duvet all day long!

3.    Gilets and Vests

For a fabulous lightweight warm extra layer, you can’t beat a padded gilet or vest. This sleeveless version of the puffa jacket is a cosy fashion piece, perfect for transitional in-between weather. Slimmer fit vests can be worn under blazers or jackets ticking the box for both warmth and street cred vibes. Choose complimentary or contrasting colours to put the finishing touch to your winter gear.

4.    Leather Jacket

Originating in biker clothing the leather jacket has been a men’s fashion staple for decades. This is most definitely an investment piece, a jacket that you’ll pull out year after year, so invest wisely. Choose soft, good quality leather. It will wear well and if anything will improve with age, lasting the test of time. Avoid wearing leather with leather. For a sizzling hot look, pair your gorgeous leather jacket with a minimal plain tee, jeans or chinos and trainers. Layer up with a plaid shirt or hoodie for those extra style points. For a very wearable, smarter alternative check out our black leather racer jacket from Selected.

5.    Padded Jacket

The padded jacket is a bit of a hybrid. Similar to the puffer jacket in that it’s made for warmth, using synthetic fillers instead of duck down. The padded jacket tends to be a little weightier with the benefit of being somewhat water-resistant too. The differences are subtle enough these days as design techniques have advanced. It really comes down to personal preference and there is much to choose from in colour, fit and style.

6.    Harrington Jacket

Initially designed for golfers the Harrington jacket has made its way into mainstream men’s fashion due to its slightly preppy appeal. The lightweight, zipped Harrington features a short body, elasticated waist and cuffs, and a collar you can button up around your neck on chillier days. The Harrington looks at home with a polo shirt or casual shirt and chinos but also looks the bomb with jeans and boots. A smart casual jacket that will take you from work to date night out.

7.    Rain Jacket

For the rain, which let’s face it can be any time of year here, you can’t beat the Millerton rain jacket from The North Face. Waterproof (and this is important) as opposed to water-resistant, the Millerton rain jacket with attached hood will keep you dry and everything you wear under it, for hours. The outer layer is an impenetrable barrier to rain and snow, while the second inner layer makes it breathable. It’s also windproof so helps to fend off wind chill. A relaxed regular fit makes this jacket a great all-rounder, available in a variety of colours.
